Inspiresport Champion Schools Finals Day: Return of the magnificent seven

The inspiresport Champion Schools Finals Day take place at the DIY Kitchens Stadium in Wakefield this Friday (July 5) with seven titles up for grabs.

Hull’s Malet Lambert School will have three girl’s sides involved after their years 8, 9 and 10 teams triumphed at the national festivals, winning all of their semi-final games without conceding a single point.

Malet’s Year 8 team defeated Outwood Academy (Haydock) 26-0, Year 9 ran out 50-0 winners against Castleford Academy and the Year 10 girls beat St Peter's Catholic High (Wigan) 26-0.

Awaiting the three Malet teams at Wakefield Trinity’s DIY Kitchens Stadium this Friday will be Archbishop Sentamu Academy (Year 8), St Peter’s RC High (Year 9) and Castleford Academy (Year 10). Archbishop Sentamu defeated St John Fisher (Wigan) 20-10, while St Peter’s won 18-10 against West Lakes Academy (Egremont) Cumbria) and Castleford Academy beat Rainford High School (St Helens) 16-12 in dramatic fashion with a last minute try.

Rainford High will, however, be represented in the Year 7 final, having defeated Ysgol Glantaf (Cardiff) 14-10 after golden point extra time. Their opponents will be St Bede's & St Joesph's (Bradford) who beat Archbishop Sentamu Academy 34-10.
Three boys’ titles will also be up for grabs in Wakefield – years 8, 9 and 10.

Outwood Academy Haydock (St Helens) defeated Archbishop Sentamu Academy 16-0 to set up their clash against Bedford High School (Leigh) who themselves overcame a tight semi-final against Malet Lambert 10-6.

An all-Yorkshire Final will take place in the Year 9 Boys category with Castleford Academy (Wakefield) taking on Sirius Academy West (Hull). Both teams performed well in their round one and quarter final fixtures with Castleford dominating Archbishop Sentamu 34-4 in the semis. Sirius, however, had to overcome a determined Bridgewater High (Warrington) 26-20.

Friday’s event will conclude with the Year 11 Boys Final which will be contested between Ryburn Valley High School (Calderdale) and Standish Community High School (Wigan). Both teams played their round one and quarter finals at home before facing opposition from Warrington in the semi-finals. Ryburn Valley proved too strong for Bridgewater High (24-16) with Standish defeating Great Sankey 26-12.

Finals day action gets underway in Wakefield from 10.45am on Friday 5 July with all the action being streamed live on the RFL YouTube channel.
